I finally realized my teenage dream of owning a “sixteener special” by treating myself to a proper Italian sports moped in my late 40s. Buying a Benelli T50 on a whim sparked a full-blown obsession with vintage two-strokes. Never had any experience, mind, but I threw myself in at the deep end—no armbands, just me and the Benelli, stripping it down and building it back up piece by piece..

Finding parts, manuals, and any information for these old Benellis was like hunting for hen’s teeth. I set about tracking down every bit of information and every spare part I could get my hands on. Soon, my shed was a goldmine filled with half-built bikes and greasy parts. I spent hours at the bottom of my garden tinkering away, learning as I went and supping tea.
